The brief
Studio A wanted the inside of the space to feel like the work that happens there — soft, hand-made, alive. The brief was loose on purpose: a three-month summer residency, walls left to the artist's hand, with the only fixed point being the room's existing palette of warm pinks and parchment.
Process
The project started on paper. Each wall was thumbnailed at A4 first, then enlarged to A2, then scaled up to the wall in pencil before any paint went near it. The colours were mixed in batches large enough to last a full day so the wall could keep one mind across hours. Painted in latex base coats and acrylic detail, finished on a ladder with a small brush for the closing lines.
Outcome
Three walls completed across roughly ninety days, with the studio open and working around them. The final piece reads at the scale of the room — large enough to be the first thing a visitor sees, soft enough that the work happening underneath it isn't fighting it for air.
Three months in a working studio also meant the residency was wider than the wall — setup days, a second pair of hands on other residents' pieces, time given to the summer workshops the studio was running. The mural was the named work; the rest was what living in the studio for ninety days asked for.
